The (Just) Right Amount of Project Management

Shira Haddad (she/her)

Whether you’re an Engineering Manager, Product Manager or individual contributor, you’ll inevitably need to develop some project management skills.

Even in organizations with dedicated project managers, learning the language and understanding the methodologies of project management can dramatically improve your effectiveness. It helps you sync with cross-functional partners, lead more intentionally, and ensure your team’s work actually ships.

The fundamentals aren’t necessarily about fancy tools or Gantt charts. Some of the most impactful principles are simple, and deeply human:

  • Over-communicate: Repetition creates clarity. Don’t assume once is enough.

  • Give and gather feedback early and often: Continuous feedback prevents last-minute surprises.

  • Follow up and follow through: Keep things moving and show you’re paying attention.

  • Wrap up thoughtfully: Rolling out work, reflecting on what went well, and what didn’t—that’s where real growth happens.

Don’t Overdo It: Two Key Notes

📝 First, project management should support the work, not overshadow it. Never uphold a process just for process-sake. Always be clear about the why - with yourself and with your team members, stakeholders and leadership. When adding a step to the process, ask yourself - does this step move us closer to clarity, progress or collaboration? If not, let’s think how we can do without it.

📝 Second, especially for women and marginalized folks in tech: we’re often socially nudged (or explicitly asked) to take on project management tasks because we’re seen as “organized,” “on top of things,” or “good communicators.” While those might be true statements, this skill is just one part of your professional toolkit. Don’t let it define you. You bring so much more to the table - technical knowledge, domain expertise, vision, leadership, delegation. Make sure those get equal air time.

So yes, project management is a critical skill to have, but don't let it be your whole story if you don't want it to be.
